CAF Under Pressure Following Referee Audio Leak From AFCON 2025 Final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is facing increasing calls to act after referee audio from the AFCON 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal surfaced publicly.

The recording reportedly indicates that referee Jean-Jacques Ndala briefly considered stopping the match when Senegal’s players left the pitch in protest. The walk-off came after a late VAR review resulted in a penalty being awarded to Morocco.

The decision caused scenes of tension in the stadium, with Senegal’s players and coaching staff voicing strong frustration over what they viewed as an unjust and decisive call. Head coach Pape Thiaw later explained that the protest was an emotional response to a moment they believed unfairly shaped the outcome of the final.

The episode has attracted worldwide attention. FIFA President Gianni Infantino criticized the walk-off, stressing that leaving the field and any form of disorder are unacceptable, particularly during a major continental final.

In a statement, CAF condemned the conduct during the match as “unacceptable” and confirmed that it is examining all available video and audio evidence before deciding on possible disciplinary measures.

Morocco has also raised the stakes by announcing plans to take legal action against CAF and FIFA, claiming the incident compromised the integrity of the final and may have affected the result.

With scrutiny mounting from fans, federations, and global football authorities, CAF is expected to issue a decision that could set a significant precedent for handling protests, VAR disputes, and match disruptions in African football.
