NNL: Paulinus, Audio calm Stormers in Uyo as Akwa United Remain Second on the Log
Akwa United kicked off the year 2026 in impressive fashion with a well-deserved 2–0 victory over Abeokuta Stormers on Matchday 8 of the Nigeria National League (NNL), played on Sunday at the Uyo Township Stadium.
First-half substitute Paulinus Okon and defender Adio Akano scored a goal apiece to secure Akwa United’s fifth win of the campaign, as coach Paul Offor’s side moved to 16 points in the Southern Conference B. The Promise Keepers are joint top on points with Sporting Lagos but sit second on the log due to an inferior goal difference.
Akwa United retained the same starting eleven that defeated First Bank in Lagos on Matchday 7. However, midfielder Ndifreke Etim was forced off midway through the first half due to injury and was replaced by forward Paulinus Okon. The substitution proved decisive, as Okon—making his first home appearance of the season—continued his fine form by opening the scoring in first-half stoppage time. He rose highest to nod home a looping header from Yannick Menegbe’s cross, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Coach Offor made further tactical adjustments after the break, introducing Ubong Essien, Etim Charles and Michael Okenwa. Akwa United dominated the second half and created several scoring opportunities, but efforts from Rasheed Quadus, Daniel Gothom, Yannick Menegbe and Okenwa failed to find the target.
The Promise Keepers finally sealed the win in the 84th minute. Yannick Menegbe was fouled at the edge of the box, and he delivered a dangerous curling free kick that was tipped onto the crossbar by the Stormers goalkeeper. Defender Adio Akano reacted quickest to smash home the rebound, doubling Akwa United’s advantage.
The victory extended Akwa United’s unbeaten home run to five matches—four wins and a draw.
Speaking after the match, head coach Paul Offor praised his players for their determination and discipline, especially after the festive break.
“It was a tough match, and I congratulate my players for their fighting spirit, commitment and focus throughout the game. Paulinus came off the bench to score again, and we kept pushing until Adio made it safe for us. I’m happy we secured all three points, and this win will motivate us to go for more victories. Our focus now is to keep working hard and prepare for the task ahead.”
Akwa United will travel to Calabar this weekend to face Rovers FC on Matchday 9, which will be their final fixture before the mid-season break.
