Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu: A Clear Example of What True Opposition Leadership Means
Honestly speaking, Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu represents the true definition of what an opposition leader should be in a democratic system. His body language, actions, and well-measured speeches have continued to inspire confidence among opposition members in Abia State. More importantly, he has demonstrated that opposition is not about noise, bitterness, or desperation for power, but about standing firmly for the interest of the people and the progress of the state.
Active opposition is essential to good governance. It keeps those in power on their toes, promotes accountability, and ensures that policies are scrutinized for the common good. Rep. Kalu has consistently shown this understanding. He engages constructively, speaks with purpose, and places the interest of Abians above party sentiment or personal gain. That is leadership with vision and maturity.
Sadly, the same cannot be said of some so-called APC leaders in Abia State. Many of them have failed woefully in their role as opposition figures. Instead of holding the government accountable and presenting credible alternatives, they have chosen the path of double standards, criticizing today, compromising tomorrow, all in pursuit of selfish interests rather than the collective good of Abians. This brand of politics weakens the party, confuses supporters, and ultimately betrays the people.
Opposition politics is not a crime, nor is it a sign of failure. Not every political season places one in power, and that reality must be accepted with responsibility and courage. The fear of being in opposition has led many to abandon principle for convenience, ideology for survival, and integrity for access. This is dangerous for democracy.
It is therefore my sincere prayer that our leader, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, uses his position to sanitize and strengthen the APC in Abia State by sanctioning and cleansing the party of unserious and double-standard leadership. The party must be repositioned to stand for discipline, consistency, and genuine service to the people, starting from those whose actions have continually undermined its credibility.
Nigeria needs strong opposition, not compromised politicians. Abia State needs leaders who understand that power is temporary, but legacy is permanent. Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has shown that one can be firm, principled, and people-oriented even outside executive power. That is the standard, and that is the kind of leadership Abians deserve.
