Why Tinubu Chose Sim Fubara Over Nyesom Wike: The Real Facts Emerge
Fresh political facts have begun to surface on why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appears to be leaning towards Governor Siminalayi Fubara rather than his former ally, Nyesom Wike.
After careful assessment, Tinubu’s political think tanks reportedly weighed the options and concluded that backing Fubara is the smarter political move.
In the 2023 presidential election, Wike openly supported Tinubu. Yet, despite the advantage of incumbency and over 3.5 million registered voters in Rivers State, the APC secured just 231,591 votes—barely 6% of the total registered voters. These were the official figures released by INEC, though the results remain controversial, with many Nigerians insisting that Peter Obi won Rivers State.
Further reviews of results from the INEC portal and independent collations suggest that APC did not genuinely win Rivers State, even with the disputed figures that were eventually announced.
Tinubu’s inner circle understands the political mathematics. They know that pushing Fubara aside could provoke serious backlash at the polls. Rivers people have shown they are not passive, and the mistakes associated with past political overreach—including the declaration of a State of Emergency—are lessons the Presidency does not want to repeat.
The President is fully aware that Sim Fubara currently enjoys massive public sympathy and grassroots support in Rivers State. Today, he is seen as the people’s governor.
While Tinubu is focused on re-election, Wike appears more invested in a fight-to-finish political battle driven by ego and control. Tinubu needs votes, not endless conflicts.
The President also knows that Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi remain strong contenders who will challenge him fiercely in the next election. In his calculations, Fubara’s camp offers fresh political value, wider acceptance, and potential electoral gains. Wike’s camp, on the other hand, is already firmly within Tinubu’s fold and has limited political alternatives.
Simply put, Tinubu cannot afford to lose bulk votes from Rivers State. And he also knows that the North will not sacrifice its voting strength just to satisfy the personal political battles of one man.
Politics is about numbers, timing, and the people—and for now, the people appear to be standing with Sim Fubara.
