ARISE Palm Resort in Uyo: A Once Ravaged Ravine turned into one of Nigeria’s Tourism and Recreational Center
ARISE Palm Resort in Uyo: A Once Ravaged Ravine turned into one of Nigeria’s Tourism and Recreational Center
By Emmanuel Ezenwa
This is not a Caribbean resort. This is Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. What was once a massive erosion ravine, threatening nearby communities, destroying access roads and putting properties at risk, is being transformed into one of Nigeria’s ambitious tourism and recreational developments.
Located in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, ARISE Palm Resort is an extensive tourism and hospitality project that tells an interesting story of environmental rehabilitation, urban development and economic opportunity.
The project began with an environmental challenge that required urgent intervention. The erosion ravine, which extended around Etim Umanah and Udo Inwang streets in Ewet Offot, had become a serious threat to surrounding properties and infrastructure. Sections of roads had been swallowed by the advancing gully, while the surrounding areas faced the consequences of continued erosion.
Rather than limiting the intervention to erosion control, the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Umo Eno pursued a more ambitious approach by reclaiming the affected landscape and converting it into a productive asset. The result is the development of ARISE Palm Resort, spread across approximately 73 hectares of reclaimed land.
Today, the resort brings together an impressive range of hospitality, sporting, recreational and entertainment facilities designed to attract visitors, families, tourists and business travellers.
Among its attractions is an artificial lake with floating bars and restaurants, providing visitors with waterfront dining and relaxation experiences. The development also features a golf course, a clubhouse, swimming pools, restaurants, cafés and other leisure facilities.
For sports enthusiasts, there are facilities for football, lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, squash and other recreational activities. The resort also has a dedicated children’s amusement area, featuring playgrounds and amusement rides, including a roller coaster.
Its hospitality and event infrastructure is equally impressive. There is a 1,500-capacity banquet hall with additional breakout rooms, exhibition spaces, villas and serviced apartments for visitors who wish to lodge within the resort. A Chinese restaurant and other dining facilities further expand the hospitality experience.
Beyond these attractions, the development incorporates supporting infrastructure, including a solar power facility, clinic, pharmacy, police post and fire station. These facilities are intended to support the operations of the resort and provide convenience and security for visitors.
However, what makes ARISE Palm Resort particularly significant is the environmental transformation behind its development.
Reclaiming approximately 73 hectares of erosion-affected land and turning it into a tourism destination demonstrates how environmental challenges can be approached with a broader development vision. Beyond protecting nearby communities and properties from further erosion damage, the intervention has created an opportunity to establish a tourism asset capable of supporting hospitality businesses, creating employment and attracting economic activities to Uyo.
When fully operational, the resort is also expected to contribute to Akwa Ibom State’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil revenue by strengthening its tourism and hospitality industry. Its location also presents opportunities to complement the state’s international aviation ambitions through increased visitor traffic.
This is an approach that other state governments can learn from. Across Nigeria, several communities contend with erosion, ravines and degraded landscapes that threaten homes, roads and livelihoods. While not every erosion site is suitable for commercial redevelopment, governments can explore innovative solutions that combine environmental protection with sustainable economic and social benefits.
Imo State, for instance, has areas around Owerri where erosion and gully-related challenges deserve sustained attention, including locations within the wider beautiful Otamiri River environment. Such environmental concerns should not be viewed solely as problems requiring emergency intervention. With proper engineering, planning and investment, some affected landscapes may offer opportunities for environmental restoration, recreational spaces and other productive developments.
The proposed Heartland Resort is another project that deserves attention. Imo State has considerable tourism potential, but the success of such an initiative will depend on translating plans and announcements into actual construction, completed facilities and a functional tourism destination. The commencement of site preparation is not the same as delivering a completed investment, and residents deserve to see meaningful progress.
ARISE Palm Resort offers an important example of how an environmental challenge can become the starting point for a much bigger development initiative. It is not just about constructing an amusement park, a golf course or luxury accommodation; it is about reclaiming threatened land, protecting communities and creating infrastructure with the potential to generate economic value.
The Akwa Ibom State Government deserves recognition for pursuing this transformation. It is an example of development thinking that other states should examine as they consider how to address environmental challenges while creating new economic opportunities.
From an erosion-threatened landscape to an ambitious tourism destination, ARISE Palm Resort demonstrates that with the right vision, planning and investment, land once considered a liability can become an asset.
