EDUCATION SECTOR EMERGENCY: GOV ENO TARGETS MASSIVE REHABILITATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS
…celebrates his Secondary School French Language teacher
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has said one of the targets of the State of emergency his administration declared in the education sector is the massive rehabilitation of public secondary schools, with the provision of staff quarters and other critical infrastructure, as obtained in model primary schools.
Speaking on Friday, October 16, 2026, during a special celebration ceremony for his French Language teacher at St Francis Secondary School, Eket, Mr. Agbor Moore, Governor Eno recalled with nostalgia, how the teacher had lived in the staff quarters, which, according to him, enabled him to concentrate, properly bond and impact positively on the students.
He said he got the information from the alumni platform that Mr Moore, who is from Cameroun but married to an Okon Eket woman, was in the State for the funeral of his in-law, and decided to, along with the Alumni Association, specially celebrate him for his years of sacrifice and impact on him, and his school mates.
Governor Eno thanked Mr Moore for helping to shape his life and recalled that the teacher introduced him to French language as well as some level of social discipline.
He commended the school’s alumni association for organising the event to celebrate their former teacher, stressing on the importance of celebrating teachers in their lifetime.
“Mr Moore taught us French about 50 years ago, and he lived in the teachers’ quarters. That’s one of the things we intend to achieve with the State of emergency in the education sector. We are going to extend staff quarters to our secondary schools.
“Teachers reward should start here on earth. We thank you for teaching us French and the discipline instilled in us. I am happy that you are alive and strong. I pray that God will continue to bless and keep you in good health,” he said.
The Governor who appreciated the Corps members teaching in St Francis who came out to receive him, commiserated with them over the death of a young Akwa Ibom Corps member who served in Enugu.
He urged corps members to take their health seriously and not to micro manage, as such could be detrimental, adding that the State operates a 24-hour emergency ambulance service, which could be contacted whenever necessary.
In his response, Mr. Moore commended Governor Eno for his rare demonstration of humility and gratitude, saying that the gesture was beyond a visit to an old school teacher, but a lesson to the world on the value of gratitude, humility, and respect for teachers.
“In a world where many forget so soon, you have remembered the path through which you passed. You have honoured not only me, but the entire teaching profession. You have shown that time cannot erase the bond between a good teacher and his student,” he said.
He also commended the Governor for his leadership strides in the State, especially the stimulation of the economy through support for small businesses, farmers and entrepreneurs, as well as touching lives of the poor through the the compassionate homes, prompt payment of entitlements to workers and retirees and maintaining of peace across the State.
On their part, some stakeholders of Eket, including the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, Professor Etie Ben Akpan and the Clan Head of Okon, HRH Akpabio Ekpoton, appreciated the Governor for the unprecedented gesture, and for his impactful development projects in the area.
They assured that the people were ready to re-elect him for a second term to continue with his good work.
Also speaking, President of St Francis Alumni Association, Mr. Sam Uko also appreciated the Governor for honouring one of their former teachers, and commended him for representing them well in his leadership of the State.
