NUJ Chairman Bags Distinguished Leadership Award for Press Freedom Advocacy

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has been honoured with a Distinguished Leadership Award in recognition of his unwavering commitment to press freedom and outstanding contributions to the advancement of journalism in Akwa Ibom State.

The award was presented by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, Uyo, during a courtesy visit to the NUJ Secretariat.

According to the citation accompanying the award, the honour was conferred on Comrade John for his exemplary leadership, steadfast defence of press freedom and remarkable efforts in promoting professionalism and excellence in journalism.

The student body noted that his leadership has inspired confidence within the media profession and strengthened the role of the press as a vital institution for democracy, accountability and good governance.

The award, signed by the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Utibe Edet Sunday, reflects the appreciation of the institution’s student community for Comrade John’s dedication to ethical journalism and his commitment to advancing the welfare and professional development of journalists in Akwa Ibom State.

Responding to the honour, the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John expressed profound appreciation to the Students’ Representative Council and the management of Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic for finding him worthy of the recognition. He described the award as both humbling and motivating, noting that it would spur him to continue championing press freedom, ethical journalism and the welfare of media practitioners.

This recognition is not just for me but for every journalist who remains committed to truth, fairness and professionalism despite the challenges confronting the profession. I dedicate this award to members of the NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, whose unwavering support and dedication continue to inspire our collective efforts to uphold the values of journalism,” he said.

He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to defending the rights of journalists, promoting capacity building and working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the media continues to play its constitutional role in fostering democracy, accountability and sustainable development.

The recognition adds to the growing list of honours received by the NUJ Chairman, underscoring his impact on the journalism profession and his continued advocacy for a free, responsible and vibrant media in the state and beyond.
