Eket Council Boss assures sustained development, announces training for media practitioner

The Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Mr. Akan Tommey, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining development initiatives across the council, assuring residents that his government will remain focused on delivering impactful projects until the expiration of its mandate.

The Chairman gave the assurance on Friday, July 31, 2026, while receiving the newly inaugurated executive of the Eket Federal Constituency Media Professionals Forum during a courtesy visit at the Chairman’s Lodge in Eket.

Welcoming the delegation, Tommey congratulated the Forum’s new leadership and expressed appreciation for the constructive relationship that has existed between his administration and media practitioners. He described the media as an indispensable partner in promoting transparency, accountability and effective governance.

He noted that his administration operates an open-door policy that encourages dialogue and welcomes constructive feedback capable of improving service delivery and advancing the collective interest of the people.

Speaking on the achievements and priorities of his administration, Hon. Tommey disclosed that major infrastructure projects are currently underway, including the comprehensive remodeling of the Local Government Secretariat, the construction of a permanent Legislative Complex and the renovation of the Council Hall to provide a more functional environment for government activities.

According to him, these projects are designed to strengthen institutional capacity while complementing the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno through improved infrastructure and efficient public service delivery.

Tommey also revealed that the deteriorating condition of the Model Primary School, Idung Offiong, has come to the attention of the council, adding that a technical assessment has already been ordered to determine the level of intervention required for its rehabilitation.

Emphasizing the crucial role of the media in democratic governance, the Chairman urged journalists and media professionals to uphold the ethics of the profession by verifying information and seeking official clarification before publication. He stressed that responsible journalism promotes public trust and supports good governance.

As part of efforts to strengthen media professionalism, Tommey announced plans to sponsor selected media practitioners from Eket Federal Constituency to the International Institute of Journalism(IIJ) for professional training.

He further encouraged members of the Forum to continue supporting the administration of Governor Umo Eno and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that collective commitment to good governance remains essential for the continued development of the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Eket Federal Constituency Media Professionals Forum, Comrade Enobong Nsimah, applauded the Council Chairman for the visible developmental projects executed across the local government, describing his administration as focused and responsive to the needs of the people.

Nsima stated that the Forum’s independent assessment of the administration showed remarkable progress in infrastructure and public service delivery, while also commending Tommey for maintaining a cordial and productive relationship with media professionals.

He appealed to the Chairman to support the professional development of journalists by sponsoring interested members of the Forum to the International Institute of Journalism, explaining that such opportunities would enhance ethical reporting and strengthen media practice within the constituency.

The visit also featured an inspection of ongoing project sites and interactive discussions on governance, infrastructure development, media responsibility and strategies for deepening collaboration between government and the media.
