Abuja, Tragedy struck in Piawe, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, as an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Blessing Akpan, was stabbed to death by yet-to-be-identified assailants in front of her residence.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of last Tuesday, left the community in shock. Eyewitnesses disclosed that the victim was attacked while on her way out, with her assailants allegedly attempting to dispossess her of her belongings.
Akpan was rushed to several hospitals by friends and neighbours, but reports indicate she was denied immediate treatment because medical personnel insisted on a police report before attending to her.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Monday, July 28, one of the deceased’s friends, who pleaded anonymity, said Akpan might have survived if she had received prompt medical care.
“It is painful that we lost Officer Blessing because of a weak and uncoordinated system. Someone was dying, and instead of attending to her, they kept demanding a police report. Even when we showed them her official NSCDC ID card, they still refused. We had no choice but to move her from one hospital to another until she eventually died,” the friend lamented.
Akpan was later confirmed dead at the Bwari General Hospital due to excessive loss of blood.
Another friend described the incident as a heartbreaking loss, stating that the officer was targeted during a robbery attempt. “She was on her way somewhere when some persons tried to rob her. They stabbed her to forcefully take her belongings,” the source explained.
As of press time, neither the NSCDC nor the police had issued an official statement regarding the killing.
The tragic death of Blessing Akpan has sparked outrage over alleged negligence by medical facilities and renewed calls for a review of emergency response procedures in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
