AKWA OBONGAWAN FLORENCE UMOH: A Visionary Cultural Leader, Community Builder, and Champion of Women’s Empowerment

By Dr. Ini Adiakpan

Florence is a distinguished community leader, cultural ambassador, and grassroots mobilizer whose life has been dedicated to empowering women, preserving the rich heritage of Akwa Ibom, and building stronger communities through visionary leadership.

She serves as the President of Mboho Iban Akwa Afaha Worldwide. Under her dynamic leadership, the organization has experienced remarkable growth, becoming one of the foremost platforms for promoting women’s development, cultural identity, economic empowerment, and community advancement.

Florence has successfully mobilized chapters and members across the 686 gazetted Afaha villages spread throughout the 25 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State, covering the three Senatorial Districts—Uyo, Eket, and Ikot Ekpene. Through her strategic vision and exceptional organizational skills, she has united women around a common purpose of service, development, and cultural pride.

Recognizing that sustainable development begins with economic independence, she championed the registration of cooperative societies across the various Iban Afaha chapters. These cooperatives have become powerful vehicles for financial inclusion, savings, entrepreneurship, and collective prosperity, enabling countless women to improve their livelihoods and support their families.

A passionate advocate for food security, Florence has empowered women with practical skills and resources to harness the economic value of locally available agricultural products such as palm fruits, palm kernels, plantains, and waterleaf. Her initiatives have transformed these natural resources into sustainable sources of income, creating opportunities for women to become self-reliant while contributing meaningfully to food sufficiency across their communities.

Beyond economic empowerment, she has remained unwavering in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Afaha people. Under her leadership, IBAN Afaha proudly showcased the beauty of its traditions during the historic 2018 Akwa Afaha Day celebration, displaying the rich cultural identity, customs, attire, dances, and traditional cuisines that define the Afaha people. Through these efforts, she has inspired younger generations to embrace their heritage with pride while strengthening unity among the Afaha clans.

Florence is also a respected voice in leadership development, policy advocacy, and community mobilization. She continues to create platforms where women and young people are equipped to lead, innovate, and participate actively in community development and decision-making. Her leadership is characterized by courage, inclusiveness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to achieving measurable results.

Her enduring legacy is seen not only in the institutions she has strengthened but also in the lives she has transformed. Through purposeful leadership, compassionate service, and an unshakable belief in the potential of women, Florence continues to inspire a generation of leaders committed to preserving culture, promoting economic prosperity, and advancing sustainable community development.

Let’s acknowledge contributions to posterity by Leading with Culture, Empowering with Purpose, Transforming Communities for Generations.
