Ofonime is an accomplished legal practitioner, public sector leader, and gender development advocate whose career has been defined by an unwavering commitment to justice, inclusive governance, and sustainable human development. Through visionary leadership and strategic public service, she has consistently translated policies into impactful programmes that empower individuals, strengthen institutions, and transform communities.
As an Assistant Director in the Ministry of Justice, she has distinguished herself in legal drafting, justice administration, policy development, and institutional strengthening, contributing to the advancement of transparent governance and equitable access to justice. Her commitment to accountability and community development was further demonstrated during her service with the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), where she served as Ombudsman, Grievance Redress Manager, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Officer. In these roles, she championed grievance resolution, stakeholder engagement, social safeguards, and interventions that protected vulnerable communities while supporting erosion and flood control initiatives across the state.
Ofonime currently serves as the State Project Coordinator of the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP), one of Nigeria’s foremost women’s economic empowerment initiatives. Under her leadership, the project has strengthened women’s cooperatives, expanded financial inclusion, enhanced livelihoods, and created sustainable pathways for economic independence. Through strategic partnerships, institutional capacity building, and community-driven interventions, she continues to empower women to become confident entrepreneurs, decision-makers, and contributors to sustainable development.
Beyond her work with the NFWP, she is a Pilot Person for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Young Africa Innovates (YAI) Programme, where she supports innovation-driven entrepreneurship by connecting young people with opportunities, business development support, and enterprise growth initiatives. Her work is helping to nurture a new generation of innovators and job creators, contributing to inclusive economic development and youth resilience.
A passionate advocate for gender equality, she has also made remarkable contributions to the legal profession through her service as an Executive Member of FIDA Akwa Ibom State and as the current State Lead of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum. Through mentorship, advocacy, and professional development initiatives, she continues to inspire and empower female lawyers while promoting the protection of women’s rights and greater representation in leadership.
Her enduring legacy is one of purposeful leadership, compassionate service, and transformational impact. She is proving that when justice, innovation, and inclusive leadership converge, women thrive, communities prosper, institutions become stronger, and sustainable development becomes attainable for all. Join me in acknowledging the contributions of this powerhouse to our ecosystem.
