Celebrating Elder Paul ‘Sports’ Bassey: A Life Of Service, Compassion And Godly Leadership

By Solomon Okpo

Today, July 9, we joyfully celebrate an exceptional administrator, seasoned sports icon, accomplished journalist, devoted Christian and compassionate public servant, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Akwa Ibom State, Elder Paul ‘Sports’ Bassey, as he marks another glorious birthday.

Your life has remained a shining example of humility, diligence and selfless service. From your distinguished career in journalism and sports administration to your current assignment as Commissioner for Sports, you have continued to demonstrate that true leadership is measured not by titles but by the positive impact made on the lives of others.

Your unwavering commitment to duty is evident in your daily routine, arriving at the office early, attending diligently to official responsibilities and ensuring that every visitor receives attention. Such dedication reflects your deep sense of responsibility and your desire to justify the confidence reposed in you by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, PhD.

Beyond public office, your compassion for your people speaks volumes. Through the ARISE Empowerment Business Grant, you have empowered petty traders in Adoro Atabong, Eket and reaffirmed your belief that leadership must translate into practical service.

By returning to your roots to uplift the less privileged, appointing liaison officers to strengthen communication with your community and promising to extend similar support across Eket Local Government Area, you have shown that genuine leadership remembers home while serving the wider society.

Your recognition with the Excellence Award by The Apostolic Church, Atabong Assembly, further testifies to a lifetime of faithful service to God and humanity. Your decision to dedicate the honour to Governor Umo Eno demonstrates humility, gratitude and loyalty, qualities that continue to define your public and private life.

The Holy Scriptures remind us: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3). Your life reflects this biblical principle through your commitment to serving both God and mankind.

As you celebrate this special day, may the Almighty God continue to crown your efforts with outstanding success. May He grant you divine wisdom like Solomon, strength like Caleb and favour like Joseph. May the Lord preserve your health, enlarge your coast, establish the work of your hands and bless your family with peace and joy.

May God continue to guide every decision you make, protect you from every evil, surround you with faithful friends and reward your labour of love. May your influence in sports development, public service and the Kingdom of God continue to grow from strength to strength.

As the Bible declares in Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” May this promise continually be fulfilled in your life.

Again, happy birthday, Elder Paul ‘Sports’ Bassey. May your new age usher in greater accomplishments, abundant blessings, divine favour and many more fruitful years of impactful service to Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and the glory of God.

Congratulations and many happy returns.
