Lawyer Urges Tinubu to Grant Pardon to Abba Kyari

August 25, 2025.

A Nigerian legal practitioner, Adamu Kabiru Adamu, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, describing him as a “national security asset” whose sacrifices should not be overlooked.

In a letter dated August 25, 2025, and addressed to the President, Adamu highlighted Kyari’s distinguished record in the fight against violent crimes, terrorism, and other security challenges across Nigeria.

“DCP Abba Kyari has, over the years, demonstrated courage, loyalty, and dedication to national service. His operations dismantled numerous criminal networks and contributed significantly to strengthening internal security at critical times,” the lawyer wrote.

Adamu argued that a presidential pardon would not undermine justice but serve as an act of mercy, reconciliation, and national healing, especially at a time when public trust in government institutions is dwindling.

“Pardon, as enshrined in the Constitution, is not a denial of justice but an expression of mercy and national unity. In times of insecurity and public distrust, such a gesture can reassure Nigerians and foster confidence in leadership,” he added.

Kyari, once celebrated nationally and internationally for his policing achievements, is currently embroiled in one of the country’s most high-profile legal controversies. His case continues to stir debate over the place of pardon for public officials facing trial.

If you were the President, would you pardon Abba Kyari or allow the law to take its full course?
