Madam Nko Okon Ette: The Grassroots Investor, Cultivating Hope, Creating Wealth, Empowering Generations

By Dr. Ini Adiakpan

In the quiet community of Idung Udo in Ekpene Obo, Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mama Nko Okon Ette has spent more than seven decades proving that true impact is not determined by formal education but by vision, industry, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others.
At 76 years old, Mama Nko stands as a shining example of resilience, entrepreneurship, and community development. Though she never had the privilege of formal education, she mastered the art of cassava farming and agro-processing through traditional apprenticeship, transforming a humble livelihood into a thriving enterprise that has sustained her family and empowered many others.

A respected cassava farmer and fufu processor, she has dedicated her life to creating value from local resources. Through hard work, discipline, and consistency, she built a successful business that supplies quality fufu to local markets, contributing to food security while promoting indigenous agricultural production.

What distinguishes Mama Nko, however, is her remarkable commitment to empowering young people. Rather than limiting her success to personal gain, she reinvests her earnings into a unique motorcycle hire-purchase scheme. She purchases motorcycles and leases them to unemployed young men, giving them the opportunity to earn a dignified living, support their families, and eventually become owners of productive assets.

This initiative has transformed lives by reducing youth unemployment, encouraging entrepreneurship, and strengthening local transportation services within Esit Eket and surrounding communities. Through her quiet but consistent investment in people, Mama Nko has become a grassroots financier whose impact extends far beyond agriculture.

As a devoted mother of three, she has demonstrated that determination, integrity, and compassion can overcome the barriers of illiteracy and limited opportunities. Her life embodies the principles of self-reliance, economic inclusion, and sustainable community development.

Mama Nko’s journey is a powerful testament to the Nigerian spirit of enterprise. She has shown that wealth is not merely accumulated—it is multiplied when invested in people. Her legacy is written not only in the cassava fields she cultivates but also in the lives of the young men she has empowered to build brighter futures.

She is a woman whose hands cultivate the land, whose vision creates opportunities, and whose generosity transforms communities. Her story reminds us that the greatest leaders are often those who quietly change lives without seeking recognition.

Mama Nko is not merely a farmer or agro-processor; she is a builder of livelihoods, a catalyst for grassroots economic empowerment, and an enduring symbol of hope, resilience, and transformative impact. Join me in acknowledging her contributions from cassava fields to changed lives: cultivating prosperity, empowering generations.
