Rep Idem Charges Public Procurement Committee Members on Embracing E-Procurement for Effective Oversight
The member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement, Rep. Unyime Idem, has charged members of the committee on embracing technology-driven approach in order to carry out its oversight mandate effectively.
This was part of Rep. Idem’s opening remarks during a one-day training programme on E-procurement for effective legislative oversight for members and staff of the Public Procurement Committee in the House of Representatives, in Abuja.
For the Committee Chairman, the training is “aimed at strengthening our collective mandate as legislators to safeguard public resources through transparency, accountability, and efficiency.”
“This training has been designed to equip us with the knowledge and tools we need to enhance our oversight capacity.”
Idem highlighted the urgent need for the transition to e-procurement, noting that “manual processes, delayed access to data, and fragmented records have often hindered the Legislature’s ability to conduct timely and effective oversight. These challenges affect our capacity to track project progress, assess agency performance, and hold government institutions accountable for their actions.”
Emphasizing the enormity of the committee’s mandate, the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Lawmaker said all hands must be on deck to see through the speedy transition to e-procurement, as this will enhance the committee’s oversight role, which is the critical bridge between appropriation and delivery.
“E-Procurement serves as the guardrail that ensures public funds move safely from the national budget to the projects that directly impact the lives of our constituents and the Nigerian people at large.”
