National Youth Games: Akwa Ibom Athletes Undergo Screening ahead of South-South Elimination
As preparations intensify for tomorrow’s South South National Youth Games elimination in Uyo, Team Akwa Ibom has taken a major step toward readiness with a comprehensive physical screening exercise for its athletes.
The screening, held at the West Itam Sports Center, was organized by the state’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) and supervised by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia. The exercise aimed to ensure that all athletes meet the required national standards and are eligible to represent the state.

In her address to coaches and secretaries of various sports associations, Mrs. Ubia applauded His Excellency Governor Umo Eno for his support for youth empowerment through Sports.
“This opportunity made possible by His Excellency the Governor must be seized with both hands” she said.
She also expressed appreciation to the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, for his leadership and unwavering support for sports development as enshrined in the Arise agenda. She highlighted his contributions in boosting athletes’ morale and improving their welfare packages.
Mrs. Ubia also expressed appreciation to the athletes for their commitment to the screening process, urging them to display discipline and excellence, especially as Akwa Ibom State prepares to host the games.
“You must prove your worth during the elimination to earn your place in the National Youth Games proper later in the month”she charged the athletes.
Athletes from multiple disciplines were screened, including male and female teams in Football, Basketball, Handball, Softball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket, Male Volleyball, and Rugby.

The LOC emphasized that the screening exercise is a critical part of Team Akwa Ibom’s preparation for the elimination games. With the process completed, attention now shifts to the final stages of training and tactical readiness.
The committee has also assured stakeholders of their commitment to delivering a successful South-South elimination tournament, promising adequate logistical and technical support throughout the event.
Other South South states will be arriving Uyo tomorrow for the team sports eliminations which starts on Saturday.
