Omoyele Sowore : You Must Treat Him With Discipline; People Have Police Cases and Issues, He Jumps In—Sowunmi
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV on Thursday, June 25, 2026, PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi has described African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as a valuable national asset, urging authorities and Nigerians alike to treat the activist and politician with respect despite disagreements over his methods and public conduct.
While maintaining that activists and public figures must understand the limits of acceptable conduct, the PDP chieftain stressed that Sowore’s contributions to civic engagement and social justice advocacy should not be overlooked. “You have to know the borderline of what is excess,” Sowunmi said before speaking directly about the presidential candidate and activist.
According to him, his views on Sowore are shaped not only by political considerations but also by a long-standing personal relationship. “And let me say, Yele is my brother we went in luck together. I beg everybody to please treat him well,” he stated.
Sowunmi revealed that a recent visit to the United States prompted him to reflect on Sowore’s role in Nigeria’s civic space and the passion that drives his activism. “I was in Atlanta the other day. And as I sat in a museum looking at it, the only Nigerian my mind went to was Yele. And I could feel the kind of passion that is driving his advocacy,” he said.
Drawing parallels between historical civil rights activism and contemporary advocacy efforts, Sowunmi said he had gained a deeper appreciation of the commitment behind Sowore’s campaigns and public interventions. “Therefore, Yele is our asset. He can be a little bit of a handful, but nothing must happen to him,” he added.
The PDP chieftain acknowledged that Sowore’s style of activism can sometimes be controversial and confrontational. However, he insisted that such disagreements should not diminish the need to protect and respect him. “You must treat him with decorum. You must treat him with discipline. He’s been very consistent,” Sowunmi said.
He further praised Sowore’s record of intervening in cases involving citizens who face legal or social challenges, describing him as someone who frequently lends his voice to causes affecting ordinary Nigerians. “People have police cases. Yele jumps in. People have issues. He jumps in,” he stated.
While noting that the activist may still have areas where his approach could evolve, Sowunmi maintained that his contributions to public discourse remain significant. “He may still have some rough edges we need him to smoothen up, but by God and everything that is good, make sure that you bring him back for us in one healthy piece,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Sowunmi reiterated his belief that Sowore occupies an important place in Nigeria’s civic and political landscape and should be protected regardless of political differences. “Too much of a national asset, we can’t lose him too,” he added.
