Ongoing Construction of Oron Maritime Infrastructure to Boost Akwa Ibom’s Blue Economy and Coastal Trade

Akwa Ibom State is advancing a major maritime infrastructure project in Oron Local Government Area, an initiative designed to harness the economic opportunities offered by the state’s coastal location and strengthen its participation in Nigeria’s growing blue economy.
The project, initiated by Governor Umo Eno under the Blue Economy development objectives of the ARISE Agenda, goes beyond the construction of a conventional ferry terminal. It is an integrated maritime and commercial development intended to support water transportation, fisheries, cargo movement, tourism and other marine-based economic activities.
Located along the Oron waterfront, around the Cross River estuary, the development is expected to improve connectivity between coastal communities, particularly through the proposed ferry connection between Oron in Akwa Ibom and Calabar in neighbouring Cross River State.
The project incorporates several facilities designed to support different aspects of maritime and commercial activities.
These include a marine terminal building, passenger jetty, cargo jetty, Joint Task Force (JTF) jetty, floating bar, warehouse, cold rooms, fish-drying and processing facilities, workshop, car park, recreational area and hotel development.
The project also features approximately 550 metres of steel shore protection, including 525 metres of piling, to protect the waterfront and support the development of the maritime facilities.
Another important component is the acquisition of two ferries measuring approximately 24 metres and 18 metres. These vessels are part of the state’s plan to improve water transportation along the Oron-Calabar coastal route, with the government indicating an ambition to eventually operate four ferries on the route.
The project is being executed by JMK Construction Company Limited and was officially flagged off on March 12, 2025.
One of the most important aspects of this development is its potential to strengthen the fisheries and marine-based economy of Oron.
Oron has a strong fishing heritage, and many households and businesses in its coastal communities depend on fishing and the trading of aquatic products for their livelihoods. However, the economic value of fishing extends beyond catching fish. Preservation, processing, storage, transportation and access to markets are equally important.
The proposed cold rooms, warehouses and fish-drying facilities could help fishermen and fish traders preserve their products for longer periods, reduce post-harvest losses and improve their ability to supply markets beyond their immediate communities.
Water transportation is another important economic opportunity. The proposed ferry service between Oron and Calabar could provide an alternative means of moving passengers and goods across the coastal corridor, potentially improving access between the two neighbouring states.
For traders, commuters and businesses, reliable water transportation could offer another route for commercial activities while reducing dependence on road transportation for certain journeys.
The cargo jetty and warehouse facilities could also support the movement, handling and storage of goods, creating opportunities for maritime logistics operators and private-sector businesses.
Beyond fisheries and transportation, the hotel, floating bar and recreational facilities introduce a hospitality and tourism dimension to the project. These developments could attract visitors, encourage local spending and create opportunities for accommodation providers, restaurants, tour operators and other service businesses.
There is also an employment dimension. The project is expected to create opportunities for people working in maritime operations, engineering, ferry maintenance, hospitality, logistics, fish processing and other supporting services. The project’s development team has projected approximately 2,000 direct jobs when the facility becomes operational, although the actual employment impact will depend on how the facilities are operated.
As of October 2026, the Oron Maritime Infrastructure and Ferry Project was reported to be approximately 85 per cent complete, according to a progress briefing involving the state government and relevant contractors.
The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced December 2026 as its target for commissioning the project.
However, beyond completing the physical infrastructure, the real test will be ensuring that the facilities become fully operational, are properly maintained and attract the businesses and economic activities they are designed to support.
Ultimately, the Oron Maritime Infrastructure Project has the potential to become an important economic asset for Akwa Ibom State, strengthening coastal connectivity, supporting local industries, improving livelihoods and creating a stronger foundation for maritime commerce.
