ONNA Chairman Rallies Stakeholders To Intensify Voter Registration Awareness 

The Executive Chairman of ONNA Local Government Area, Hon. Kufre Umoren, has urged stakeholders in the area to intensify efforts in creating awareness on the importance of voter registration as INEC commences the exercise across Nigeria.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement session held on Wednesday, 27th of August, 2025 in Abat, ONNA, Hon. Umoren emphasized that meaningful participation in the democratic process begins with voter registration. He described the exercise as a civic responsibility that empowers citizens to influence governance.

The Chairman appealed to political stakeholders across party lines, including members of the APC and PDP, religious leaders, women leaders, youth presidents, and the Federated ONNA Students of Nigeria (FOSON), to support the campaign by mobilizing eligible residents who are yet to register.

“Our people must understand that voter registration is the gateway to exercising their constitutional rights. If we desire better governance, improved infrastructure, and greater bargaining power for ONNA in 2027, we must ensure that every eligible voter from ONNA, regardless of where they live, returns home to register,” Hon. Umoren said.

Also speaking, former federal lawmaker Rt. Hon. Pat Ifon called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to decentralize the process by moving closer to ward centers, thereby making registration more accessible. He urged ward leaders to begin immediate mobilization, stressing that ONNA should rank among the top-performing local government areas in voter registration within the state.

In his remarks, Ezekiel Umoh highlighted the peculiar challenges faced by the people of Ikwe group of villages who live and work in Utana as fishermen. He suggested that arrangements be made to facilitate their transportation back to Ikwe for registration.

Other notable speakers included Hon. Imo Attat, Bishop Ufot Sunday, Elder Nelson Ntia, Apostle Elijah Jack and Chief Gibson Umana, who all pledged their support for the sensitization initiative. The highlight of the meeting was the appointment of Hon. Imo Attat as Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the ONNA Committee for the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, scheduled to begin on September 8, 2025.

The meeting was attended by the Member representing ONNA in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Ufot Sunday; the Vice Chairman, Lady Mfon Uko; Leader of Legislature, Hon. Samuel Felix; Secretary, Arc. Mfon Akpabio; PDP and APC Chapter Chairmen; former Chairmen of Council; current and past political office holders; the FOSON President; youths; and other stakeholders of ONNA Local Government Area.
