Peter Obi Camp Confirms Talks With PDP, Other Parties Ahead Of 2027 Elections
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, who confirmed this in Abuja on Thursday, stated that Obi remained open to conversations with political parties and individuals committed to building a better Nigeria.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, is reportedly in ongoing discussions with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political actors, signalling a potential shift in the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, who confirmed this in Abuja on Thursday, stated that Obi remained open to conversations with political parties and individuals committed to building a better Nigeria.
“It is no longer a secret. The PDP has made and is still making overtures,” Yunusa said.
“They are beckoning on Mr. Peter Obi — several of their leaders have spoken publicly about this.”
He continued, “However, like our principal has said time and again, he remains open to discussions that will lead to the rescue of Nigeria from our present precarious socio-economic predicaments.
“It has never been about Peter Obi as a person. It has always been about Nigeria and the Nigerian people.”
According to Vanguard, when asked if the PDP had made specific offers or whether any decisions had been reached, Yunusa responded, “Discussions are ongoing and when the time comes, he will make whatever decision has been taken collectively in the interest of our nation Nigeria.”
Yunusa emphasised that the task ahead was far greater than any individual ambition and required a collective, national effort.
“The opposition has since realised that the task before all who are genuinely interested in bequeathing a Nigeria future generations would be proud of is one that can only be achieved with unity of purpose,” he added.
Dr. Katch Ononuju, a founding member of the Obidient Movement and Director General of the Heritage Centre, also described the talks as a positive development.
In a telephone interview, he said, “The talks between Obi and the PDP at this time are a healthy development. I say so because most of the problems the opposition is trying to solve today began in the PDP.
“The solution can also be found when the PDP and other opposition parties come together to tackle the elephant in the room.”
Ononuju noted that Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and several others were PDP members until shortly before the 2023 elections.
.
“It was the refusal of the party to zone the presidential ticket to the South after eight years of President Buhari, a northerner, that angered most party leaders, especially southerners, which led to the mass exodus,” he said.
“The group of five (G-5) governors led by Chief Nyesom Wike, now FCT Minister, remained in the party but worked against its presidential candidate, Atiku, in protest.”
He added, “Another opportunity to correct this mistake is again presenting itself as we approach 2027.
“It is an opportunity to right the wrongs and give every part of Nigeria a sense of belonging.”
Also lending his voice, PDP chieftain and founding member, Professor Jerry Gana, said during an appearance on Arise TV that Obi would be a strong contender if chosen as the PDP’s candidate.
Peter Obi had resigned from the PDP in May 2022 after a fallout over the party’s presidential ticket zoning.
He joined the Labour Party and became its presidential flag bearer in the 2023 elections, where he emerged as a major opposition figure and mobilised significant youth support through the Obidient Movement.
