State Department will take “appropriate action” against foreigners in US praising Kirk’s death, official says

From CNN’s Jennifer Hansler

The US State Department will “undertake appropriate action” against foreigners in the United States “praising, rationalizing, or making light of” Charlie Kirk’s death, Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau said Thursday.

Landau indicated that this action taken could include revoking visas. The administration has been aggressive in its visa revocations, particularly of students with ties to protests against the war in Gaza.

“In light of yesterday’s horrific assassination of a leading political figure, I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” Landau wrote in a post on his official X account.

“I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action,” he said. “Please feel free to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention so that the (State Department) can protect the American people.”

Landau said he would direct consular officers, who are involved in adjudicating visas, to monitor the comments to his post.

In a reply to a separate post highlighting another post about the shooting, Landau said that if someone knows the poster’s name, “we’ll revoke her visa. Immediately. Though I doubt she has a visa.”
