Enough of the Online Drama”: Afigh Esid Ekid Calls for Calm in Esit Eket

By Miriam Itama

Afigh Esid Ekid Organization Worldwide has stepped into the growing accountability debate surrounding the Esit Eket Host Community Development Trust (HCDT), calling for calm, unity and an end to what it described as the continuous “internet embarrassment” of Esit Eket Local Government Area.

In a strongly worded reaction to the controversy, the President General of the organization, Hon. Engr. Mkpong Isangedighi, appealed to traditional rulers, political leaders, women groups and youths to place the development of Esit Eket above personal interests.

The group expressed concern that whenever Esit Eket trends online these days, it is often for reasons that leave people reaching for aspirin instead of applause.

According to the organization, accountability and stewardship are normal responsibilities of public office holders and should not trigger unnecessary hostility or division within the community.

Afigh Esid Ekid noted that through its weekly programme, “Nneme Afigh,” it had repeatedly demanded stewardship reports from several public office holders, including councillors, supervisors, political appointees and community-based trusts.

The organization revealed that only the Local Government Chairman, two ward councillors, one Ward Personal Assistant to the Governor and representatives of Emoimee HCDT had so far presented their scorecards, while many others were still “holding tightly to their microphones of silence”.

It maintained that asking questions about stewardship should not automatically turn neighbours into online enemies or convert social media platforms into virtual wrestling arenas.

The group also frowned at the increasing use of the controversy by some youths and media handlers to attack elders, royal fathers, political stakeholders and members of Emoimee HCDT.

Warning against further insults and heated exchanges, the President General said the organization had intervened and would engage relevant parties in search of peaceful resolutions.

Meanwhile, Afigh Esid Ekid announced the suspension of further discussions on the matter across its platforms pending the outcome of leadership meetings expected to involve the concerned parties.

The organization insisted that while accountability remains important, preserving peace and protecting the image of Esit Eket should remain a collective responsibility.
