Enugu Police Arraign Social Media User for Cyberbullying, Stalking of Enugu State SSG

The Enugu State Police Command, on Tuesday, 27th January 2026, arraigned a male social media user, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi (aged 41), before a Magistrate Court in the State over alleged defamatory publication and cyberbullying/stalking on Facebook against the person and office of the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

Investigations revealed that the suspect, who operates a Facebook account under the name “Sen Chijikem Ugwuanyi”, on 15th January 2026, made a post falsely attributed to the SSG. The post alleged that the SSG stated: “Some people are meant to be used to win elections, while some are meant to be given appointments and political dividends.” The suspect further attached the photograph of the SSG to the post.

The suspect admitted to making the publication but failed to provide any proof that the SSG made such a statement. Consequently, he was remanded in the Correctional Centre, while the case file was transmitted to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice, as ordered by the court.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, has cautioned social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility in the use of social media platforms. He warned against cyberbullying, stalking, and the publication of defamatory content capable of inciting hatred or breaching public peace, stressing that offenders will be made to face the full weight of the law.
