Former Akwa United Coach, Late Charles Bassey Laid to Rest in Eket

Nigerian football legend and legendary coach, who managed several clubs including Calabar Rovers, Wikki Tourists, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Mobil Pegasus, and Akwa United FC, was laid to rest today in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The funeral service was conducted by The Salvation Army Church, Ikot Usoekong.

Major Ekom Sampson delivered a sermon on the topic “A Life of Trouble,” citing Job 14:1-9. He encouraged the congregation to remember God in both good and bad times.

He urged, “When things are well with us, let’s remember God… Anybody born of a woman is full of trouble.” He added, “Let me encourage us that the time of trouble is the time we must move closer to God.”

The preacher offered practical advice on how to navigate life’s challenges, saying, “Life is from God; let’s appreciate it. Life is short; let’s make the most of it. Life is painful; let’s endeavor to make the best of it.”

The first son, Mr. Charles Bassey Jnr, paid tribute to his father, saying, “Your legacy continues to inspire me, though your sudden departure left me heartbroken. You hold a place that no one else can ever fill.”

Elder Paul Bassey, Commissioner for Sports, in his tribute, encouraged the late Charles Bassey’s family to be consoled and comforted that the deceased led an exemplary life, and his legacies of dedication, hard work, and sincerity shall continue to be remembered and celebrated by many lives he touched.

The Vital Ladies Association, Old Boys of Hope Waddle School Calabar, Church and Village also gave their tributes, adding that the deceased was a very good man who worked very hard to make a good name for himself. They urged the family to remain united and to sustain the legacies of the deceased.
