I’ll Continue to Work Till the Day I Leave Office — Akan Tommey

The Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, has said that his administration is determined to continue working until the very last day of his tenure, with a steadfast commitment to delivering quality governance and meaningful development to the people of Eket.

Tommey stated this during a familiarization visit by the new leadership of Eket Federal Constituency Media Professionals Forum on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Chairman’s Lodge in Eket.

Congratulating the newly inaugurated executive of the Forum, the Chairman thanked members for the visit and appreciated the media body for its continued support and partnership with his administration.

He assured the delegation that his government operates an open-door policy anchored on inclusiveness, adding that constructive criticism remains an essential ingredient for good governance.

“My doors are always open because we run an all-inclusive government. We welcome constructive criticism that is aimed at improving governance and enhancing service delivery to our people,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to people-oriented governance, Tommey emphasized that every project being undertaken is driven by the desire to improve the welfare of residents, noting that his focus remains on delivering tangible dividends of democracy.

“I will continue to work till the day I leave office. I want to do the very best for Eket. Our focus is primarily on infrastructure development, which aligns with the ARISE Agenda of His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno,” he stated.

Highlighting some ongoing projects, the Council Chairman disclosed that his administration had embarked on the remodeling of the Local Government Secretariat to give it a befitting and modern outlook, describing the existing structure as outdated and no longer conducive for efficient service delivery.

He also revealed that construction is ongoing on a permanent legislative complex that will provide befitting offices for councillors and improve legislative activities within the council.

“The present legislative building cannot adequately accommodate councillors and members of the executive, especially during important sessions such as budget presentations. That is why we are constructing a permanent legislature building,” he explained.

According to him, the council hall is equally undergoing extensive remodeling to provide an alternative to Eket City Hall, and will be more functional and also provide a conducive environment for official engagements.

Speaking on the deteriorating condition of the Model Primary School in Idung Offiong, Tommey disclosed that he had already directed relevant officials to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the facility to determine the level of intervention required to restore the school.

The Chairman also charged media practitioners to uphold professionalism by always seeking clarification on government policies and activities before going to press, stressing that accurate and balanced reportage strengthens public confidence in governance.

As part of efforts to enhance professional capacity within the media, Tommey announced plans to sponsor some media practitioners from Eket Federal Constituency to the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) for professional training.

He further called on members of the Forum to continue supporting the administration of Governor Umo Eno and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that sustained collaboration among stakeholders is essential for accelerated development.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Eket Federal Constituency Media Professionals Forum, Comrade Enobong Nsima, commended Tommey for what he described as his remarkable achievements and unwavering commitment to delivering democratic dividends to the people of Eket.

Nsima said the Forum had objectively assessed the performance of the Chairman and was satisfied with the visible developmental strides recorded across the local government, particularly in infrastructure and public service delivery.

“We have carried out our assessment, and we are satisfied with what you have done for the people of Eket. Your administration has remained focused on delivering the dividends of democracy, and we encourage you to do even more,” he said.

He further appreciated the Chairman for maintaining a cordial relationship with media professionals and for consistently carrying the media along in the affairs of his administration.

The Forum Chairman also appealed to Tommey to extend educational support to members of the association by sponsoring interested media practitioners to the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), noting that such training would further improve professionalism and ethical journalism within the constituency.

The visit featured touring of project sites and extensive interactive discussions on governance, development, and the role of the media in promoting accountability and responsible public communication.
