Police have detained a man over the death of his wife in Rivers

The Police Command in Rivers State has apprehended a man known only as Mr. Abuchi for the suspected murder of his wife in Amaji village, located in the Umuoyoro Community of the Omuma Local Government Area.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, verified the incident and the suspect’s arrest during a phone conversation with our reporter, stating that an investigation is currently underway.

“Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been taken into custody, and the Commissioner of Police has mandated a comprehensive investigation to ensure prompt justice,” she remarked.

The suspect was later transferred to the Eberi Police Division in Omuma LGA.

The community was struck by tragedy on Thursday when the couple visited their farm in Amaji village.

While the specifics of the event remain unclear, a source informed our reporter that a dispute arose between the couple, during which the suspect allegedly attacked his wife, a mother of two, with a kitchen knife, resulting in her death.

The source stated, “People became aware of the incident when the woman let out a loud scream. This attracted other villagers who were working nearby. They rushed to the scene, overpowered the man, and restrained him.”

He added that the incident left the community in shock and mourning, as residents pondered what could have triggered the confrontation.

A security source, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak, mentioned that the suspect reportedly told investigators he was unaware of what had come over him during the incident.

In the meantime, a human rights organization, the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign, condemned the incident as a severe example of human cruelty and urged the police to carry out a thorough investigation.

The National Coordinator of the group, Prince Wiro, issued a statement on Friday asserting that there is no justification for the suspect’s actions, labeling the act as reprehensible.
