RE: Construction of Sanitation and Hygiene Facilities in Public Spaces and Institutions in Esit Eket, others LGAs

In response to the criticisms regarding the construction of sanitation and hygiene facilities in Esit Eket and other local government areas, which were approved by the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council at its meeting on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, it is important to acknowledge the broader implications of this initiative and the positive impact it will have on the selected communities.

His Excellency the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno PhD, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to the welfare of the people of Akwa Ibom State, and this project is a testament to that dedication.

First and foremost, the construction of sanitation facilities is a crucial step towards making Esit Eket Open Defecation Free (ODF). This initiative is not merely about providing toilets; it is about enhancing public health, improving hygiene standards, and fostering a cleaner environment for our citizens.

Open defecation poses significant health risks, and by addressing this issue, the Governor is prioritising the well-being of our communities. The facilities will not only serve as toilets but will also be equipped with solar-powered borehole systems, ensuring a sustainable water supply for maintenance and cleanliness.

I recall that during Pastor Eno’s tenure as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources in the previous administration, an Executive Bill known as the Akwa Ibom State Water Resources Sector and Regulation Law was presented to the House of Assembly in 2022 and subsequently passed into law. It is clear today that the Governor is following the provisions of that law by approving sanitation and hygiene facilities in the state. Having previously served as the Chairman of the Committee on Rural Development and Public Utilities in the State Legislature, I can confidently state that the approval of sanitation and hygiene facilities in Esit Eket and other areas is a crucial development, as it aligns with the law. It will promote public health, support the goals of the Open Defecation Free initiative, and enhance infrastructure while improving wastewater management and regulatory oversight across the state.

Moreover, it is important to recognise that the Governor would not have acted alone. He would have collaborated with local representatives and stakeholders who understand the unique needs of rural communities. These individuals are working closely with him to ensure that the development plan for each local government area is comprehensive and inclusive. It is, therefore, safe to say that the sanitation project is just one aspect of a larger plan that includes various infrastructural developments aimed at improving our local government area.

We are very grateful to the Governor for appointing a son of Esit Eket, a former local government chairman, as Commissioner in a crucial ministry like the Ministry of Power. We believe this connection presents us with a valuable opportunity to advocate for the needs of our communities, including the goal of connecting Esit Eket to the national grid before the end of the Governor’s first term. We hope that during his tenure, Pastor Eno’s leadership will bring about significant advancements in human capital development, infrastructure expansion, and various other areas of progress in our state.

It is disheartening to see the Governor being criticised for a project that aims to improve the quality of life for our people. Instead of disparaging his efforts, we should embrace this initiative as a step towards progress. The Governor has our best interests at heart, and we must trust his vision for our Local Government Area.

As we look forward to the 2027 elections, let us unite in our support for His Excellency Governor Umo Eno. As a community, we have collectively decided to vote for his reelection and to support him for eight years, just as his predecessors have enjoyed since 1999. And it is imperative that we stand by him as he works tirelessly for the betterment of Esit Eket. Let us pray for his continued guidance and success in bringing meaningful development to our beloved local government area.
