Governor Umo Eno’s Aide calls for the regulation of social media
…says dirty social media history has consequences
By Prince Efiok
An advocacy has been made for the regulation of social media in Nigeria to curb the excessive behaviour of cyberbullying, fake news, blackmail, and misinformation which is eroding the moral fabric and peace of the society.
Speaking with the presenter of ‘Ukara Idung Nnyin’, Kufre Udo, on Tangsio 102.7 fm Uyo, on Wednesday, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Umo Eno on Ethical Orientation, Rev. Osondu Ahirika PhD, said uncontrolled use of social media for negative activities is a trend that poses a serious threat to moral precepts, social values, peace, and stability of the society.
Dr Ahirika observed that although Nigeria’s social media laws are still evolving, existing media laws on defamation, profanity, and misinformation should be enforced, and culprits punished, to serve as a deterrent to others.
He called for moderation by social media content creators, tasking them to desist from using excessive vulgarity which are offensive to our sociocultural and religious values as a people.
The SSA who argued that having a dirty social media history has consequences, said the Internet never forgets and accordingly charged citizens to use the social media with good conscience so that what they post today will not be revisited to haunt them in future, while job hunting, seeking a life partner, or going visa interview to travel abroad among other prospects that moral clarity will be required.
Dr Ahirika thanked Tangsio 102.7 FM for using its platform to support and promote ethical values, expressing confidence that Governor Umo Eno’s vision to energise the crusade against social vices will be accomplished.
