Governor Umo Eno’s Economic Vision…A Government That Empowers Businesses for Growth
By Patrick Edeke
The idea that government has no role in business as construed by some persons, in my opinion, is a misconception, especially when we look at how a supportive government can directly fuel economic growth.
Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, seems to be a testament to this.He is working assiduously to rebuild and reposition the state’s middle class by intentionally empowering local businesses.
Governor Eno’s approach, without doubt, recognizes that direct employment alone can’t solve the widespread issue of unemployment. Instead, the focus is on creating an enabling environment with adequate ennoblement where businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), cannot only thrive but create jobs as well.
A state’s economic health is intrinsically tied to the success of its businesses. When businesses flourish, they contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the total value of all goods and services produced within the state. As these businesses grow, they generate more revenue, which in turn leads to a higher Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the state government through taxes and other levies.
This creates an exciting virtuous cycle as businesses contribute to the state’s coffers, and the state can then reinvest those funds into better infrastructure, education, and healthcare as it is being intentionally done by Governor Eno’s administration, which further supports business growth and the well-being of its citizens.
The reverse is not only true but economically detrimental. A stagnant business environment can lead to low GDP and IGR, leaving the government with limited resources to provide essential services and support its population.
Governor Eno’s approach acknowledges this vital connection and positions business growth not just as a private-sector issue, but as a core component of the state’s overall economic strategy.
The Governor’s background as a seasoned businessman gives him a unique understanding of the challenges that entrepreneurs face. He’s not just paying lip service to the idea of supporting businesses; he’s taking concrete steps to address one of the most significant barriers: access to funding. By collaborating with the Bank of Industry (BoI) and providing a counterpart fund to the tune of N2 billion(first tranche), Governor Eno is ensuring that businesses in Akwa Ibom State can access loans at a single-digit interest rate.
This move is a game-changer. High interest rates often make it impossible for small businesses to borrow the capital they need to expand, purchase new equipment, or hire more staff. By making affordable financing available, the administration is providing a lifeline to countless entrepreneurs.
This isn’t just a political strategy; it’s a competence weaved in a compassionate governance model rooted in the understanding that a thriving business community directly improves the lives of individuals and families. It empowers people to create their own opportunities, reducing reliance on government and fostering a sense of economic independence.
Ultimately, this focus on empowering the private sector reflects Governor Eno’s capacity and competence. He’s demonstrating a clear vision for the state’s future, a vision where the government acts as a partner and enabler, rather than a hindrance.
His commitment to growing businesses is a direct investment in the state’s economic future, and it has the potential to turn around the fortunes of Akwa Ibom, creating a more prosperous and resilient economy for everyone.
