By Hon Kingsley Edoho, FCIPR

In an era where politics is often reduced to empty promises and self-serving rhetoric, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Victor Antai, the Executive Director, Projects (EDP) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), shines as a rare example of leadership with a human face.

Rt. Hon. Victor Antai, PhD, Executive Director of Projects, NDDC

Across Akwa Ibom State, his name resonates not just for the projects he oversees, but for the countless lives he has touched through empowerment, accessibility, and generosity. To many, he is more than a politician, he is a brother, a benefactor, and a bridge-builder. Perhaps this is why his people in Oron Federal Constituency fondly call him “Alhaji”, a title that reflects respect, benevolence, and trustworthiness.

True leadership, as Antai demonstrates, goes beyond holding high office. It is about lifting people out of poverty, creating opportunities, and showing kindness when it matters most. From supporting young entrepreneurs to installing solar-powered streetlights that bring security and progress to communities, his leadership emphasizes inclusion and shared prosperity.

For decades, the five local government areas that make up Oro Nation suffered from perennial electricity challenges, leaving households, businesses, and critical infrastructure in prolonged blackout. Today, that story is changing. With interventions championed by Antai, light is slowly returning to the people, along with renewed hope.

His compassion is best illustrated by the story of a widow, Mrs. Maria Etim from Mbo Local Government Area, who once approached him for assistance. She not only received the help she sought but also scholarships for her four children to attend any university of their choice in Nigeria. For Mrs. Etim, and many others like her, Victor Antai is proof that God often works through human vessels.

Currently, his scholarship programme supports over two hundred students across various tertiary institutions in the country, a testament to his belief that education is the surest path to empowerment.

At a time when public trust in leadership is fast eroding, Dr Antai’s consistency shows that politics can indeed wear a human face. His accessibility, his willingness to listen, and his unmatched generosity mark him as a different breed of leader. He has not only represented Oro Nation with pride but has extended his goodwill across Akwa Ibom, cutting across tribe, language, and political affiliation.

A visit to his office gives one a true definition of public service. Unlike many who wield authority as a shield, Antai remains approachable, treating every citizen as family. His vision is clear, he wants an Akwa Ibom united in progress.

Today, the State faces a crucial question: What type of leaders should drive its future? The answer lies in men like Dr Victor Antai, leaders who combine competence with compassion, vision with humility, and authority with generosity. Development is never accidental; it is the product of leaders who genuinely care for people.

Dr Victor Antai represents this new political reality. His track record proves that politics can be a platform for service rather than self-interest, and that governance can empower rather than impoverish.

His story reminds us that leadership matters. When a leader is compassionate, the people prosper. When a leader is generous, communities thrive. Akwa Ibom does not just need leaders in office, it needs leaders in action. Leaders like “Alhaji” Victor Antai.

Because in the end, true leadership is not about power, but about people.

Born on May 19, 1965, at Methodist Hospital in Ituk Mbang, Akwa Ibom State, Sir (Dr) Victor Etim Antai, the Executive Director of Project, NDDC, is a distinguished Methodist who has been honoured with the prestigious title of KJW.
