Akwa state delegation to the upcoming second Niger Delta Games Edo 2026 have begun close camping activities as the February-20 commencement of the games continues to come into sharper focus.
Over 270 athletes and 46 coaches from 16 sports associations in the state converged on Uyo Township Stadium earlier today, Tuesday, before being transported to the state’s permanent orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps at Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai LGA, for accreditation and check-in.
As monitored throughout the day, accredited athletes and officials were treated to a scrumptious breakfast at the stadium at about 7 a.m. before they were ferried on board fully air-conditioned coaster buses to the camp.
Upon arrival at the camp, members of the delegation were seen being given mattresses, buckets, pack of groceries and meal tickets. The tickets later fetched them packed jollof rice and fried chicken for lunch from a chef and her team who were already standing by.
According to the chairman of the state liaison committee and commissioner for sports, Elder Paul Bassey, the aim of the exercise is to allow for intensive training and proper physical conditioning, improved fitness, as well as to deepen bonding and engender proper team cohesion.
Mr Bassey noted that athletes were screened and re-screened to ensure that only those who met the criteria for participation were selected to fly state colours when the games get under way.
“They are going to be camped from February 17 to 18, before departing for Edo state directly from the camp on February 19.”
“Everything they will be needing while in camp has been completely catered for in consonance with the guidelines of the competition.” He said
The games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organized by Dunamis-Icon Limited, with the theme “Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talents” will be held in Edo state from February 20 to 27.
