As Gov. Eno Commissions Model Primary Health Centre in Eket, Today

By Ekemini James

In line with his resolve to strengthen healthcare delivery, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, will today, December 29, 2025, commission a newly completed Model Primary Health Centre in Eket Local Government Area.

The facility, built and fully equipped in line with the ARISE Agenda, is designed to provide accessible, affordable and quality medical services to residents of Eket and adjoining communities.

The commissioning ceremony which is scheduled for 2pm is part of deliberate reforms in the healthcare by Governor Eno’s administration.

On assumption of office, the Governor made it clear that the health of the people will be treated as a central pillar of governance, a commitment that culminated in the declaration of a State of Emergency in the health sector on September 12, 2025.

That decision triggered a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s health architecture, with primary healthcare positioned as the foundation of a functional and efficient system.

The model centres which reflects his philosophy of modern infrastructure are structured to deliver maternal and child healthcare, immunisation services, outpatient care, emergency response and preventive health services, while also providing a conducive working environment for medical personnel.

This integrated approach is aimed at reducing pressure on secondary and tertiary hospitals and improving early diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

Complementing infrastructure development is a robust manpower and welfare strategy. Under the ongoing emergency health intervention, over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres are currently undergoing rehabilitation across the state, while about 3,000 health workers, including full-time professionals and experienced retirees, are being recruited to address manpower gaps in the health sector.

The Governor has also reviewed the consolidated medical salary structure and introduced additional allowances to improve staff welfare and retention in the medical sector.

Healthcare delivery under the Umo Eno administration is further being strengthened through institutional reforms and inter-agency coordination. Agencies such as the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency and the Primary Health Care Development Agency have continued to record measurable progress, ensuring that expanded infrastructure translates into real access, affordability and sustainability.

As we all gather today to witness the commissioning, the significance of the moment is unmistakable. The Governor is building a healthier, more productive Akwa Ibom State where no community is left behind.
