WHY EDUCATION DOMINATES SENATOR EKONG SAMPSON’S THREE YEARS OF LEGISLATIVE MILESTONES

Leaders who prioritize human development understand one truth: quality education is the most reliable pathway to sustainable progress. It equips minds with contemporary skills that meet the demands of the 21st century.

Distinguished Senator Ekong Sampson, PhD, Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, belongs to that rare class of leaders. He sees education as a lens for anticipating the future. His approach mirrors Nelson Mandela’s conviction that “education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world” and that “through education, the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor.”

Senator Sampson’s personal academic journey explains his policy choices. A distinction in Mass Communication in 1985, an LLB and a Doctorate in Law. A professional journalist, author, poet, and public affairs analyst. He has experienced the transformative power of education first hand, and that experience shapes his representation.

During the 2023 campaigns, education was the centerpiece of his manifesto. Voters responded with a historic landslide victory. The overwhelming support he received in the recently concluded APC primaries for 2027 confirms that constituents see and appreciate the result Of Senator Ekong Sampson’s robust legislative engagement.

A defining feature of his educational scheme is fairness. There are no political conditions, no interference, and no discrimination by gender, tribe, or geography. Infact, Senator Ekong Sampson does not know 95 Percent Of the beneficiaries of his various educational grants. All the 12 local government areas in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District are covered in batches, strictly on merit and need.

His interventions within three years include:100 million naira education grant to 500 students and teachers; 200 million naira project support to Akwa Ibom State University; 10 million naira for law students from the district in Nigerian Law Schools; 5 million naira to Okobo students through the Okobo Development Union.

Hundreds of students across the Senatorial District have received support, with priority for indigent students in science, law, medicine, nursing, technology, communication, and accounting.
*Cumulative Impact*: Scholarships, grants, and educational support initiatives worth over 250 million naira. This level of commitment to education is unprecedented in the history of representation for Eket Senatorial District.

Funding is matched with facilities. Senator Sampson has constructed Computer-Based Test centers at St. Vincent Secondary School, Oti-Oron, Okobo; Excellence College, Ikot Unya, Mkpat Enin; and St. Francis Secondary School, Ikot Ataku, Okon Eket. He has also reactivated electricity projects and donated a 500KVA transformer to a Community in Okon Eket.

Ongoing construction covers schools, classroom blocks, sports facilities, administrative buildings, and hostels at Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi; Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden; Government School, Ikot Ekpenyong; Girls High School, Ikot Ibiok; Community Secondary School, Udung Uko; and several other institutions. Perimeter fencing and technical upgrades are also underway.

In addition, he has partnered with training institutions to organize workshops and conferences for teachers, media professionals, youth, and young entrepreneurs.

As Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Senator Sampson consistently advocates increased allocation to UBEC and TETFund for underserved communities during budget debates.

His legislative footprint includes sponsoring the bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, now at third reading; the bill for the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Eket, at second reading; and strong advocacy for the full takeoff of the University of Maritime Studies, Oron. The bill for the Federal Medical Centre, Akwa Ibom South, has been passed into law.

While education remains his signature, Senator Sampson’s mandate extends to lawmaking and oversight. He has facilitated employment for over 55 constituents in federal MDAs and corporate institutions. Business grants worth 500 million naira have been disbursed. Youth entrepreneurs have received cars, mini buses, tricycles, and motorcycles to expand their enterprises.

In healthcare, he commissioned newly constructed doctors’ call rooms at Immanuel Hospital, Eket, and General Hospital, Ikot Abasi. Construction is scheduled to begin soon at General Hospital, Iquita, Oron, and Cottage Hospital, Ibeno, with more planned across the district.

The verdict is clear. Senator Ekong Sampson’s performance is rooted in a service philosophy: use every opportunity to impact people and build a legacy.

Three years into his tenure, Akwa Ibom South now sets the benchmark for effective representation in the Nigerian Senate. With his anticipated ranking status and robust collaboration with the Senate President, Senator Dr. Godswill Akpabio,GCON and the Governor Of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD more interventions are expected in the years ahead.
