Akwa Ibom Sports Festival: Gov Eno Nurturing Talents, Driving Tourism

By Jeremiah Edoho

Across the world, sports have proven to be a powerful driver of tourism, inclusivity, community well-being, economic growth, and job creation.

Iconic sporting events such as the Super Bowl, Formula 1 races, Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2016 Rio Olympics, which attracted over 1.1 million visitors and contributed $1.2 billion to Brazil’s economy, are clear examples of how sports can boost tourism and transform cities into global destinations.

In that same spirit, Akwa Ibom State has rekindled the almost diminished flame of sports and has joined the league of states leveraging sports for development through the Ibom 2025 Sports Festival, themed “Nurturing Talents, Promoting Tourism.” The festival commenced on Monday, September 9, 2025, at the Uyo Township Stadium, with Governor Umo Eno, PhD, ably represented by his Deputy, Senator (Mrs.) Akon Eyakanyi, performing the ceremonial kickoff of the opening football match.

The festival features over 3,000 athletes drawn from the 31 Local Government Areas of the state, competing in 18 sporting categories such as Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Chess, Judo, Para-Athletics, Tennis, Swimming, Wrestling, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, Golf, and indigenous games like Ayo and Kokowa, among other games. The objective is to discover and groom young talents while creating pathways for them to connect with global scouts, agents, and managers for national and international exposure.

Governor Umo Eno, in his opening remarks, emphasized the economic and social value of sports:

“Sports today is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, and we must discover new talents, groom them, and expose them to the right opportunities where they can bring us laurels like Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong of Etinan descent, WBO Heavyweight Champion Moses Itauma, and NBA Coach Ime Udoka.”

The Governor further assured that his administration is committed to upgrading sports infrastructure across the state, including the Uyo Olympic-size swimming pool, Ikot Ekpene and Eket Sports Complexes, as well as the Ibom Sports Academy in Eket. Additionally, the soon-to-be commissioned ARISE Resort in Uyo, with world-class facilities for golf and indoor/outdoor games, will further position Akwa Ibom as a hub for sports tourism in Nigeria.

Beyond competitions, the festival is expected to enrich the local economy as visitors and sports tourists explore Akwa Ibom’s serene environment, unique cuisine, such as Afang, Atama, Edikang Ikong, and Ekpang Nkukwo, and vibrant cultural heritage. This aligns with Governor Eno’s vision under the ARISE Agenda to use sports, tourism, and infrastructure development as catalysts for sustainable economic growth.

In conclusion, the Ibom 2025 Sports Festival is not just about nurturing talents but also about projecting Akwa Ibom as a leading sports and tourism destination in Nigeria and beyond.
Governor Eno’s foresight in harnessing the multifaceted power of sports underscores his genuine commitment to building a prosperous, inclusive and globally competitive Akwa Ibom State.
