Beyond Medals: Governor Umo Eno Positioning Akwa Ibom on the Global Sporting Map

The Uyo Township Stadium was a sea of colors on Monday, September 8th, 2025. The air pulsed with excitement – drums rolled, flags waved, and chants echoed as Governor Umo Eno officially declared open the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.
But beyond the electrifying atmosphere and ceremonial grandeur, the governor’s speech unveiled something far deeper: a strategic blueprint to reposition Akwa Ibom as a hub for sports development, youth empowerment, and tourism growth under his ARISE Agenda.
When Pastor Umo Eno sought the mandate of Akwa Ibomites, he promised to invest in youth development through sports. Less than two years into his administration, that promise is taking shape in remarkable ways.
“This festival,” the governor declared, “is in fulfilment of a campaign promise I made – that if elected, we would deploy resources to the promotion of sports and get our youths ready to compete and conquer the world in various sporting activities.”
More than a competition, the festival is a talent-discovery platform, a carefully designed stage where tomorrow’s champions will be unearthed, groomed, and prepared to shine, not only for Akwa Ibom but for Nigeria and the global sporting arena.
Governor Eno’s vision is rooted in his belief that Akwa Ibom is bursting with untapped potential. He proudly highlighted the state’s growing influence on the world sporting stage: from William Troost-Ekong, the Super Eagles captain with roots in Etinan; to Ime Udoka, who rose to coach the NBA’s storied Boston Celtics; and Moses Itauma, the WBO heavyweight boxing champion the governor recently celebrated in London.
“These great sports stars have defined excellence and success,” Eno remarked. “And there are many more waiting to be discovered.”
For him, this festival is a launchpad – the springboard from which the next global icons of Akwa Ibom will rise.
Turning vision into reality requires more than passion; it demands strategic investment. For the first time in Akwa Ibom’s history, Governor Eno has created a stand-alone Ministry of Sports, led by veteran journalist and internationally respected sports administrator Elder Paul “Sports” Bassey.
Under Bassey’s stewardship, the state is establishing a Sports Academy in Eket, acquiring world-class training equipment, and developing modern sporting facilities to match global standards. Among these ambitious projects is the ARISE Resort in Uyo – an audacious waste-to-wealth reclamation initiative that blends sport, leisure, and tourism. Featuring a nine-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor arenas, and lush recreation spaces, the resort is poised to become a sporting and tourism hub when it opens in December 2025.
“The lack of modern equipment has always been one of the reasons for our inability to win laurels at major national and international sporting events,” Eno explained. “We hope that with these tools, the story will now be different.”
The theme of this year’s festival, “Nurturing Talents, Promoting Tourism,” captures the very essence of Governor Eno’s strategy: leveraging sports as an engine for tourism and economic expansion.
Imagine a future where international tournaments are staged at the world-class ARISE Resort, drawing athletes, scouts, and fans from across the globe. Picture elite sportsmen and women training year-round at the Eket Sports Academy, honing their skills under expert mentorship. Envision tourists flocking to Akwa Ibom – not just to witness electrifying competitions but also to explore its pristine beaches, historic landmarks, and culinary wonders after a day of cheering in the stands.
This is the seamless blend of sports and tourism at the core of Governor Eno’s vision, a deliberate strategy to create jobs, boost local businesses, and position Akwa Ibom as Nigeria’s premier sporting destination.
The festival goes beyond athletics; it’s a celebration of Akwa Ibom’s vibrant identity. From music and dance to culinary artistry and heritage displays, the event highlights the state’s cultural richness while attracting visitors and investors alike. In doing so, it doesn’t just discover athletes, it exports Akwa Ibom’s story to the world.
Across 18 competitive categories spanning athletics, football, volleyball, swimming, and more, athletes will compete at venues including the Uyo and Eket Township Stadia, Tower of Ivory in Ediene Abak, and Aka Community Secondary School.
Governor Eno urged participants to embody excellence, resilience, and unity: “Put your talents and skills on full display, imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, build friendships, and win laurels for yourself and for the state.”
As the festival unfolds, one thing is clear: Governor Umo Eno is not merely hosting a sporting event, he is building a legacy. Through talent discovery, modern infrastructure, and tourism-driven development, his administration is laying a foundation that could redefine Akwa Ibom’s place on both Nigeria’s sporting map and the global tourism landscape.
And when he finally declared the games open invoking “the name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”, the stadium erupted in applause and optimism.
For many, this festival is not just about medals. It is about dreams taking flight, a moment where Akwa Ibom steps boldly into the global spotlight, recognized not just for talent, but for transforming sports into a thriving tourism economy.
