Gov Eno Urges the Church to Maintain a United Front for Society Development

Hails Catholic Church as Pivot of Social Growth

… Highlights State’s Expanding Humanitarian Footprint

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has urged the Church in Nigeria and the State to remain united in the pursuit of the common good of humanity, while commending the unmatched commitment of the Catholic Church to humanitarian service.

He described the Catholic Church as the single largest non-governmental investor in education, healthcare, and social support across the nation.

The Governor made the remarks during the Second Plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria hosted at Obot Akara in the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene, where he served as Chief Host. He warmly welcomed the Bishops and applauded the host, the Catholic Bishop of Ikot Ekpene Diocese, Bishop Camilus Umo for the dedication and excellence in organizing the conference.

Governor Eno noted that the Catholic Church has consistently demonstrated what it means to live out faith in action, praising its immense contributions in uplifting communities beyond the scope of government. He assured that his administration remains committed to people-centered leadership that prioritizes the welfare of all.

Outlining his administration’s humanitarian strides, the Governor disclosed that 206 Compassionate Homes have already been delivered for widows and the vulnerable, out of a target of 500 under the ARISE Compassionate Homes initiative. He further revealed that 477,000 households have so far been reached under Phases One and Two of the Free Food Distribution Programme.

He also highlighted the establishment of a standalone Ministry of Humanitarian Services, the ARISE Care for the Elderly initiative, and other programmes designed to cushion the burdens of the less privileged.

“These interventions reflect our shared mission with the Church – to care for the vulnerable, bring hope to the needy, and ensure no one is left behind,” the Governor emphasized.

The plenary was graced by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who chaired the plenary; the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty; the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji; alongside a galaxy of Bishops and priests from across the country.

Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to continue partnering with the Catholic Church and other faith-based organizations in building a compassionate, inclusive, and peaceful society.
