Uduak Ikot and the New Era of Development in Esit Eket

At the swearing-in of Mrs. Uduak Ikemesit Ikot as the first ever female Chairman, Esit Eket Local Government Council, many expected the usual routine of government that has existed in the area over many administrations past.

Expectation was low because she is a woman; a typical African mindset that believes women cannot lead. But in the midst of doubt, unbelief, and finger-crossing, one thing stood out very prominent- she was widely loved and accepted.

Hitting the ground running, Hon. Ikot began to introduce a fresh approach to leadership, one driven by practical projects, human capital development and a genuine commitment to improving lives.

Across communities, markets and schools, the signs of this new era are becoming increasingly visible.

One of the administration’s most ambitious projects is the ongoing renovation of the Uquo Market, a project expected to transform the ancient market into a modern commercial hub capable of attracting more traders and boosting economic activities.

At the same time, the extensive landscaping and environmental improvement work at the Council Secretariat is giving the council headquarters a befitting outlook which addresses the long-standing flooding and drainage concerns.

Amongst many other key reasons, these projects reflect a deliberate effort to create infrastructure that serves both present and future generations, turning Esit Eket into a modern commercial hub.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Mrs Ikot has invested heavily in people. Through business grants/ start-up support, many residents have received the encouragement needed to grow their businesses and become financially independent.

Farmers have equally benefited from the donation of Keke tricycles and motorcycles to ease the transportation of produce from farms to markets.

To cut down on the high level of unemployment currently experienced in the country, nearly 200 young people have been engaged into various council committees with monthly payment, creating employment opportunities while encouraging youth participation in governance.

Education has remained one of the strongest pillars of her administration. Hon. Uduak Ikot introduced a Free Holiday Tech Camp where children were exposed to robotics, electronics, coding and other digital skills that prepare them for the future.

Laptops have also been donated to deserving students to support learning in today’s technology-driven world.

Across all public primary schools in Esit Eket, pupils have received free school uniforms, school bags, sandals, exercise books, and even chalk for teachers, easing the burden on parents while creating a better learning environment.

Her administration has also demonstrated compassion through several social intervention programmes. Just recently, all council-sponsorrd graduates of the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre received ₦500,000 each as start-up grants to begin their businesses.

Furthermore, in her love and support for the physically challenged, Ikot donated orthopedic wheelchairs to persons living with disabilities. She also provided food support for widows, the elderly and vulnerable families, supported educational scholarships, distributed relief materials during festive periods, and a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the Nigeria Police Force, Esit Eket division, to strengthen security operations within the local government.

The council boss has equally invested heavily in agriculture with the 5-hectre watermelon plantation, supported community development initiatives and continued to partner with stakeholders to improve healthcare, education and social welfare.

Perhaps what distinguishes Hon. Mrs. Uduak Ikemesit Ikot is not simply the number of projects undertaken, but the balance between infrastructure and human development.

While there is still more to be done, there is little doubt that Esit Eket is witnessing a new era of purposeful development under the leadership of Mrs. Uduak Ikot.
