Esit Eket Chairman Flags Off Reconstruction of Uquo Main Market, Begins Secretariat Landscaping

It was a moment of great jubilation in Esit Eket Local Government Area as the Council Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Uduak Ikemesit Ikot, flagged off the reconstruction of Uquo Main Market.

The Council Chairman used the medium to reiterate her administration’s commitment to addressing the critical needs of the people, describing markets as integral parts of community life and local economic development.
“I made a promise to the people of Uquo during my campaign that if elected Chairman, I would fix this dilapidated market. Today, I am here to fulfil that promise,” she said.

Ikot informed the people that her administration has also commenced the landscaping of the Local Government Secretariat, a project aimed at addressing the persistent challenge of poor drainage and flooding, particularly during the rainy season where vehicular movement within the premises becomes difficult.

She further announced plans for a massive empowerment programme during the commissioning of the market, which will coincide with activities marking her second anniversary in office. Ikot therefore called on the people to continue to support her administration with prayers for strength and wisdom as it undertakes projects aimed at improving the lives of the people.

Also speaking, the Council Secretary, Comrade Godwin Francis, informed the people that the reconstruction of the Uquo Market was timely and in fulfilment of the Chairman’s campaign promises. He noted that the project reflects the Chairman’s desire to improving the economic life of the people.

In a brief overview of the project, the Works Officer for Esit Eket, Engr. Ubong Cardinal, disclosed that the project would be executed in phases, beginning with the construction of 350 market shades in the first phase, and assured that the project would be completed within the shortest possible time.

Speaking on behalf of the traders and market workers, the Market Mistress, Mrs. Alice Clement, expressed deep appreciation to the Council Chairman for her courage in undertaking such a massive project despite the financial implications. She described the initiative as a long-awaited intervention that will greatly improve trading activities in the area.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Councillors representing Wards 5 and 6, which make up the Uquo group of villages, Hon. Samuel Henry and Hon. Sampson Philip, commended the Council Chairman for embarking on the reconstruction project. They also paid tribute to the late former Council Chairman, Rt. Hon. Udo Edukere, who originally constructed the market during his administration.

The lawmakers praised Hon. Ikot for responding to the yearnings of women, youths, and the entire people of Esit Eket, noting that her administration has remained faithful to its campaign promises.

Also speaking on behalf of stakeholders, Hon. Etim Benson Akansi lauded the Council Chairman’s performance since assuming office. According to him, the reconstruction of the market is a landmark project with significant political and economic impact.
“It was the construction of this market that secured a second term for the late Rt. Hon. Udo Edukere. With the reconstruction of this market, your second term is inevitable,” Akansi remarked.
