IICC: Where Ideas Meet Opportunity

Ibom International Convention Center, IICC under construction

In every great city, there comes a moment when ambition meets architecture—when concrete and steel beam begin to echo with the promise of ideas, cultures, and human encounters yet to happen. Uyo, the serene and steadily rising capital of Akwa Ibom State, stands on the brink of such a moment.

Soon, when construction cranes and scaffold now decorating the skyline gives way, a new landmark will emerge: the Ibom International Convention Centre, IICC. When , by projection, the gates of the 5,000–seat facility are flung open later this year, the vicinity of Ibom Tropicana mall will not merely unveil a building; it will reveal a gateway to global engagement, positioning Uyo firmly on the international events map.

The journey of the convention centre has not been a simple one. Construction first began in 2009 but stalled early, leaving the project abandoned almost at foundation level. For years, the skeletal remains stood as a reminder of unrealized promise.

That narrative began to change in 2023. During the election campaigns, Pastor Umo Eno as governorship candidate, pledged that no infrastructure funded by the resources of Akwa Ibom people would be left to decay. It was a commitment to continuity, accountability, and respect for public investment.

True to that promise, the governor in May 2025 flagged off the reconstruction of the convention centre and the adjoining Ibom Hotel facility. By August 2025, the administration moved decisively to ensure completion by awarding the project to Craneburg Construction with an 18-month timeline for delivery.

When completed, the Ibom International Convention Center will stand within the Tropicana Shopping Mall area of Uyo, a strategic location that blends hospitality, leisure, Commerce and modern infrastructure. The facility will feature a 5,000-person capacity convention hall, multiple meeting rooms designed for conferences and exhibitions, and an accompanying 14-storey 200-bed Ibom International hotel equipped with modern amenities including a presidential suite and swimming pool.

While the Convention centre is seen more like a venue, it is a catalyst for economic transformation. Across the world, cities with thriving convention hubs have witnessed remarkable economic and social benefits. Large-scale events such as trade fairs, business conferences, exhibitions, and cultural festivals bring thousands of visitors who fill hotels, dine in restaurants, patronize local businesses, and explore surrounding attractions.

For Uyo and other residents in Akwa Ibom State, the implications of the IICC are significant. Speaking with the Senior Project Manager of Craneburg Construction, Antoine Nakhle, he disclosed that over 600 locals have so far been engaged to handle different skills. The IICC is projected to create more than 3,000 jobs, particularly for local residents as opportunities will emerge across sectors—from hospitality and event management to security, logistics, and facility operations.

Equally important is the role such a facility plays in promoting tourism. By hosting national and international events, the convention centre will attract visitors who might otherwise never have discovered the cultural warmth, culinary richness, and scenic beauty of Akwa Ibom. Conferences and exhibitions often serve as the first introduction that travellers and visitors have to a city, and those experiences frequently inspire return visits.

Beyond economic gains, convention centres also serve as platforms for human connection. They become spaces where professionals exchange ideas, where entrepreneurs showcase innovation, and where communities gather to celebrate culture and creativity. They encourage networking, collaboration, and the cross-pollination of ideas that fuel growth in industries and societies alike.

Across Africa, several convention centres have already demonstrated how such facilities can transform cities. The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in South Africa, with a capacity of over 13,000, has become one of the continent’s most successful event venues, drawing global conferences against the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain.

The Johannesburg Expo Centre hosts major exhibitions and trade shows that attract thousands annually, while the Kigali Convention Centre, KCC in Rwanda has helped position Kigali as one of Africa’s leading destinations for international meetings and diplomatic gatherings.

For Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, IICC represents a deliberate strategy to diversify the economy beyond oil and unlock the vast potential of tourism and hospitality. With modern facilities, strategic location, and growing infrastructure within the state, Uyo is gradually emerging as one of Nigeria’s most attractive destinations for conferences and large-scale events.

Though the timeline for completion is put at 18 months, Nakhle said Craneburg Construction is poised to deliver the project in August 2026, approximately earlier than scheduled.

Perhaps, when the lights finally come on and the first delegates take their seats, it will mark the culmination of years of anticipation. Besides, one thing that would remain indelible in the minds long after the ribbon is cut, is that the Ibom International Convention Centre will continue to shape the city around it—drawing visitors, nurturing businesses, creating jobs, and strengthening Uyo’s place in the global conversation.

For residents of Akwa Ibom and visitors alike, the IICC promises a new stage where ideas meet opportunity, where cultures meet curiosity, and where a city steps confidently into the world.
